Why are suitcases so expensive?

They aren`t! You don`t need to pay a fortune to get a good suitcase. I`ve been travelling the world for more than half a century and the three best cases I`ve had haven`t been particularly expensive. One was bought in Glasgow, Scotland at a remainder store and with a tiny ding in the frame. Great case. Great bargain. Got the frame ding sorted out without any problem and at no cost. Only reason for buying another case is that that one had no wheels on it - in those days suitcases generally didn`t. The next one was an even better bargain. A quality ABS shell, beautifully designed and made but with no fancy fitting out inside. Probably a production overrun for an expensive line. Still have it. Would use it if I needed to. The third one came from China at 3 for £51. Much smaller case, though bigger than a carry-on. Often use it when not travelling by air. Again ABS but with a zip joining the two halves.

What I use most - and always when I travel by air - is a small backpack - small enough to go under an airplane seat. First-class piece of luggage. I can`t remember what it cost - somewhere over £50 more than ten years ago. It`s been to Canada, USA, Holland, Spain, Africa, China, New Zealand and sundry assorted other parts of the world.

Hard shell luggage stuff is good. However my experience with much cheaper items, carefully purchased, has also been good.

The weak point in most suitcases (though it`s only rarely I check any cases nowadays) is the wheels. Spinner wheels are fragile because they stick out from the body of the case and are easily broken. For that reason I wouldn`t buy a case with four spinner wheels but rather with two semi-recessed wheels. Much more robust.

Handles tend to be another weak point. Examine the fixings carefully.

Larger cases tend to be weaker. Buy the smallest you can get away with.

Avoid brittle plastics and poor-quality fabrics.

Don`t rely on locks or zips. If you checking the case as hold baggage, ensure that there`s a substantial luggage strap tightly around it.
